However, when Stacker took a look back at the top-performing articles of 2026 so far, some clear themes emerged. Of course, every audience is not the same, but similar appetites show up across markets: practical help, local relevance, curiosity, and trust.
For our mid-year analysis, titled “How Publishers Win: The Articles Driving Outsized Traffic and Engagement in 2026 So Far,” we looked at national content published across more than 1,000 unique news sites in our Stacker network from Jan. 1 to May 26, 2026. Instead of examining the stories with the most pageviews or pickups, we focused on a combined metric: pageviews per pickup. This allows us to understand which topics and angles generated the strongest reader response when publishers chose to run them. We also drew on recurring feedback from partners across the U.S. and Canada about what they want more of, what gives them pause, and where their editorial priorities are headed.
The result is a practical guide to how publishers can get more from syndication, which articles offer reliable value, and which overlooked pieces may be worth a closer look.
Some of the strongest stories weren’t simply the ones picked up by the most publishers.
In the first half of 2026, the articles that outperformed tended to make broad topics feel more urgent, whether through a timely hook, a specific or data-backed angle, or a clear reason to click. That could mean a new phishing scam broken down by state, a lifestyle trend that feels surprising but familiar, or a health article that helps readers understand a much-discussed condition or concern.
