Most popular movies on Hulu this week

Hulu subscribers' tastes have remained largely the same since last week, with big-budget films and franchise favorites remaining on the list of the streamer's most popular movies. However, one independent film is joining the list this week to shake things up a bit.

Mike Judge's film "Idiocracy" was released almost 18 years ago on Sept. 1, 2006, but it's perhaps more topical now than ever, as Hulu's rankings show. The satirical science-fiction film stars Luke Owen as an average man who hibernates for 500 years, only to wake up as the smartest man in a dystopian version of America. The film takes a sardonic tone as it addresses themes of climate change, corporate greed, and American capitalism. Be warned: humorous as it is, "Idiocracy" presents an ultimately grim vision of the future.

If you're more interested in movies that transport you completely out of the realm of reality or films that guarantee a happy, satisfying ending, then check out Stacker's list of the most popular movies on Hulu to find your perfect watch. The top 10 were ranked using data from Reelgood as of April 18, with IMDb ratings and other data points added for supplementary insights.
