States with the most expensive gas prices

  • States with the most expensive gas prices

In April, crude oil prices in the U.S. plunged to less than $0 per barrel for the first time in history admid the coronavirus pandemic—down from roughly $60 per barrel at the start of the year. The downturn was caused by a drastic drop in demand paired with nowhere to store the oil.

Gas prices fluctuate regularly around the country; islands, for example, generally have higher prices because oil is shipped in, while larger cities charge more due to local tax rates. Crude oil costs also play a role, as do factors like location, taxes, weather, and the whims of gas station owners. That name-brand stations charge more than other gas stations for the same quality of product further clouds the picture. Similar to store brand vs. big brand issues in other markets like food or personal care, larger gas companies across the country engage in price-fixing and false advertising to push equal products to consumers for higher costs.

AAA tracks average daily gas prices per gallon for each state. Using data pulled from AAA on June 30, 2020, Stacker ranked each state and Washington D.C. from the lowest to highest cost of gas. Prices for regular, mid-grade, premium, and diesel gases were considered. Frequent drivers, read on to discover where to plan your next road trip to keep gas costs reasonable.

For each state, we included supplementary data on state taxes from the American Petroleum Institute (data last updated January 2020) and the number of miles driven in that state from the Federal Highway Administration (data last updated in 2018). Disparities between states are caused by many factors including taxes, proximity to refineries, environmental laws, touris/travel seasons, and what kind of oil is being used.
