For families deciding where to put down roots, the quality of local public schools can carry just as much weight as housing costs, job opportunities, or the length of the morning commute. Across the U.S., some cities stand out for school systems that combine strong academics with experienced teachers and resources designed to help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
Many of the places that rise to the top aren't the country's largest cities. Most are midsize suburbs, tech hubs, and college towns, ranging from just over 100,000 residents to more than 450,000, where schools are closely tied to community life.
Not every place on this list is a city in the strictest sense. Arlington, Virginia, is a county, and The Woodlands, Texas, is an unincorporated master-planned community. Both are ranked alongside incorporated cities in Niche's evaluation of places to live.
To find where public education stands out, Stacker looked at Niche's 2026 ranking of the cities with the best public schools in America. Niche's ranking is a weighted average of the grades of each area's public schools, which factor in state test scores, graduation rates, SAT and ACT scores, teacher quality, and reviews from students and parents. The top 11 places earned an A+ for their public schools, and the remaining nine earned an A. Population figures are from Niche.
