    For those keeping an eye on their caloric intake, shrimp is a pretty perfect food. A medium-sized shrimp is only about 7 calories and packs quite a nutritional punch. Shrimp are high in protein, selenium, vitamin B12, phosphorus, choline, copper, and iodine—all things our bodies need to stay healthy and fight disease.
It's little wonder that shrimp is the most popular seafood in America. A November 2024 report from the National Fisheries Institute found that shrimp was the nation's most commonly consumed seafood in 2022 for the second year, and the average American ate 5.5 pounds of the shellfish over the year. In 2025, however, President Donald Trump's tariffs may threaten Americans' shrimp habits. Since 94% of the shrimp we eat comes from overseas, according to International Trade Commission data cited by the Southern Shrimp Alliance, import tariffs could drive up prices of the nation's favorite seafood. Before Trump's new trade policies, India produced 40% of the shrimp eaten in the States—but with a whopping 50% tariff levied against Indian imports as of September 2025, shrimp fans may have to look elsewhere or shell out a few extra bucks for their favorite seafood.
Naturally, not everyone will be affected by these market shifts. Shellfish is adults' most common food allergy, but the rest of us can't get enough. If you are tired of your standard shrimp dishes, it might be time to switch things up. There are options beyond tossing it in a stir-fry or a pasta.
