Deliciously fresh and healthy fish recipes

In 2022, the most recent year for which there's data, Americans consumed 19.7 pounds of seafood per capita. Per the National Fisheries Institute, which released these findings in a November 2024 update, these numbers reflect a growing interest in tinned fish, with consumption of canned tuna, canned sardines, and canned shellfish on the rise. Nearly 20 pounds of seafood may sound like a lot, but consider that the Department of Agriculture's dietary guidelines suggest eight ounces a week—or 26 pounds a year.

Why so much seafood? Well, there are lots of compelling reasons. Canned fish, for example, isn't just trendy, but also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory and heart health benefits. In general, seafood is high in protein and vitamin D, and has been shown to boost your brain power, improve your sleep, and even prevent vision loss. In other words, you could probably use more of it in your diet than you're getting right now.

 

But if the idea of eating at least 26 pounds of fish yearly sounds, well, a little fishy, we're here to help. There are plenty of ways to cook common varieties of fish—like salmon, tilapia, and basa—that won't leave a bad (or even worse, bland) taste in your mouth.
