1970 started with Pan Am flying the first Boeing 747 passengers across the Atlantic and ended with a brand-new Environmental Protection Agency. In between, roughly 20 million Americans turned out for the first Earth Day, the Beatles split, and Monday Night Football made its debut on ABC.
Most of what happened that year never made the news. It happened in living rooms with plastic-covered couches, on apartment stoops, in station wagons packed for a move out of state, and around Christmas trees buried in tinsel. Somebody usually had a camera, and the prints went into albums and shoeboxes for the next half-century.
Stacker compiled 26 photos of everyday life in 1970, drawing on family snapshots shared online alongside archival and news photography.

1 / 26A computer operator at work on an IBM System 370
In 1970, "working with computers" meant this: a sweater, a pair of thick-framed glasses, and a whole room set aside for one machine. Computer rooms were kept cold for the equipment, so the sweater was a practical choice, not just a fashion one. The job was a mix of typing commands at the console and keeping an eye on a wall of blinking lights. Most people in the building had never touched the computer and never would. They just sent their requests down the hall and waited for the printouts to come back.

4 / 26A Little Leaguer waits for a pitch in Levittown, Pennsylvania, June 1970
The uniform was a T-shirt from the local sponsor (in this case, Carl's Transmission), a pair of jeans, and a batting helmet. This young hitter in the Levittown Continental Little League has his eyes on the pitcher and his bat cocked. Behind the fence, parents settle into lawn chairs, and the kids not batting sprawl in the grass next to a rust-streaked oil drum doing duty as a trash can. Levittown was a planned suburb that William Levitt's company built in the 1950s, which meant it had plenty of kids and plenty of ballfields.

Someone helpfully labeled this tree "1970," in case the tinsel didn't give it away. With the presents opened and stacked underneath, one family member sits on the floor trying out a brand-new recorder, while someone else stretches out on the couch to wait out the concert.

8 / 26"My papa's welcome home party from boot camp 1970"
A "Welcome Home" sign hangs in the front window as a young soldier, still in uniform, stands with family outside a brick house. A shirtless kid on a high-rise bike and a few relatives drifting in and out of the frame make it look like the whole block got the news.

14 / 26Inside Dominick's Finer Foods in Chicago, 1970
Before self-checkout and barcode scanners became the norm, grocery shopping meant waiting in line while cashiers rang up every item by hand. Packed checkout lanes, paper grocery bags, and shelves filled with familiar household brands made supermarkets like this a weekly stop for millions of families.

17 / 26Passengers are interviewed after the Great (Little) Train Robbery, July 18, 1970
Riders on the Brackenridge Park miniature train in San Antonio first assumed the holdup was a staged Old West bit. It wasn't. Two soldiers from Fort Sam Houston robbed the passengers of cash, jewelry, and checkbooks, and they only realized it was real when one robber pressed a gun to a passenger's head. Police caught the pair quickly, and because robbing a train is a federal crime, the case went to federal court (Texas Public Radio).

25 / 26Kids take a break from trick-or-treating in Rego Park, Queens, Oct. 31, 1970
Three trick-or-treaters take a seat on a Rego Park stoop in Queens, paper candy bags in hand. Two of them are wearing classic store-bought costumes of the era: a molded plastic mask and a printed vinyl smock. The kid on the left wears a Johnny Astro space helmet mask with a smock that reads "Super President," the hero of a short-lived 1960s cartoon. Next to them is a Tin Man, and then a princess in silver sequins who skipped the mask altogether. Halloween 1970 fell on a Saturday, so nobody had school to worry about the next morning.
