Most popular movies on Netflix last week

Everyone seems to love a good gut-busting animated comedy, full of charming characters and clever jokes—and one franchise that delivers just that has solidified two spots on Netflix's latest most-watched movies list.

Fans of the "Shrek" series have a lot to be excited about at the moment: as of early April, a fifth installment in the franchise is in development (with rumors circulating about a possible 2025 release date), plus two earlier films in the franchise were added to Netflix on May 1. This week, subscribers have been revisiting the first and fourth movie, "Shrek Forever After," following the titular ogre, his wisecracking donkey, and the love of his life, Princess Fiona. Blending humor, adventure, and heart-warming moments, "Shrek" is now garnering new fans on Netflix, two decades after the first movie's theatrical release in 2001.

There are some more adult-appropriate movies on the latest Netflix movies chart too. "Mother of the Bride" is a Netflix original romantic comedy starring Brooke Shields as Lana, whose daughter (Miranda Cosgrove) is getting married. But what should be a precious family milestone takes an unexpected turn when Lana discovers that her daughter is marrying the son (Sean Teale) of one of Lana's exes (Benjamin Bratt)—meaning things quickly get complicated. The movie premiered on the streaming service on May 9, and though it's all-star cast had many subscribers checking it out, the response has been less than stellar from both viewers and critics.

Another feature that's riveting subscribers is 2019's "The Peanut Butter Falcon," a heartwarming adventure story about a young man named Zak (Zack Gottsagen) who dreams of becoming a professional wrestler. Zak, who has Down syndrome, escapes from his nursing home to pursue his passion and forms an unlikely friendship with Tyler (played by Shia LaBeouf), an outlaw fisherman. Together, they set out on a journey down the American South, encountering various challenges and obstacles. The buddy film, which joined Netflix on May 5, explores themes of friendship, acceptance, and the pursuit of one's dreams against all odds.
