States with the highest COVID-19 infection rates

  • States with the highest COVID-19 infection rates

A stunning one in every 279 U.S. residents tested positive for COVID-19 during the week ending Nov. 21, according to numbers recorded by the COVID-19 Tracking Project. The surging caseload, which has been most notable throughout the Midwest, comes just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday and cooler weather throughout most of the country, which inevitably coincides with more time spent indoors where the virus is more likely to spread.

To determine the states with the highest rates of reported COVID-19 infection, Stacker compared case numbers from the COVID Tracking Project with population data from the U.S. Census (American Community Survey 2018 5-year estimates). The COVID Tracking Project, a volunteer effort housed at The Atlantic, compiles and standardizes data from state public health agencies. Data are current as of Nov. 22 and reflect the past month’s worth of new cases. States are ranked according to their reported cases per 100,000 people in the past week.

Various metrics underscore the severity of the COVID-19 crisis, with the Midwest, West, Northeast, and Northwest all seeing record-setting throughout October and November. Isolating any region as “safe” is all but impossible to do amid the spread as swaths of the country consider shutting down again and/or exercising precautions to prevent repeats of spring behavior.

Keep reading to find out more about which states have the highest COVID-19 infection rates.
