47 photos that show what life looked like in 1977

Somewhere between Watergate and whatever was coming next, America exhaled. Not all the way — there were still lines at the gas pumps, still a president people weren't sure about, still a sense that something large and uncertain was sitting just over the horizon. But that wasn't the year most people were living in. Most people were living in the year that showed up in their driveway on a Saturday morning, the one that smelled like percolator coffee and someone's older brother's Led Zeppelin album bleeding through the bedroom wall.

These photographs came from shoeboxes, old albums, and the backs of drawers that don't get opened very often. A woman at a roller rink. A kid in a backyard with nothing to do and the whole afternoon to do it. A prom couple in a parking lot, looking like they invented the concept. No headlines, no monument to the moment. Just the decade mid-sentence, comfortable in its own skin.

What you notice is how unhurried everything looks. Not slow — unhurried. Like no one had anywhere to be that couldn't wait ten minutes. Like a photograph was still something you saved rather than something you took. 1977 looked like this, and most of the people in it had no idea how good that was.

The woman standing is serving. The woman at the end of the table has her eye on the photographer. Summer in Brooklyn looked like this.
