Counties in every state where COVID-19 cases are growing fastest
As businesses reopen around the country and people venture out into a "new normal," COVID-19 cases have surged in various states. The week of June 14, 10 states hit records for the number of new cases, while Florida—widely considered likely to be the next coronavirus epicenter—saw its highest single-day case count on June 19 of 4,049. It's the fourth time in eight days Florida broke its own state record for single-day case counts. The state has now documented more than 100,000 cases since the pandemic began.
Within each state, testing reveals a patchwork of hot spots and regions where case numbers have seen declines. Spikes have put pressure on elected officials in various towns, cities, counties, and states to revise safety guidelines, most commonly manifested as rules for wearing masks in public.
To determine which counties in every state where COVID-19 cases are growing the fastest, Stacker consulted The New York Times' COVID-19 data repository, which includes case and death values compiled from state and local health agencies. Seven-day moving averages were calculated using this data to reduce the influence of different state and county reporting methods. The county with the highest average growth rate over the past two weeks in every state is considered the county where COVID-19 cases are growing the fastest. Any county with fewer than 20 cases on June 7 was removed from the data.
The cases per 10,000 people statistic was calculated using county population data compiled from the U.S. Census' 2018 American Community Survey.
Keep reading to see which counties in your state have the fastest increase in COVID-19 cases right now.
