Americans will pay 20 cents less on average to fill up their tanks compared to the same time last year as they head off to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this week.
"Ahead of Thanksgiving, motorists continue to be teased by the prospect of a $2.99 per gallon national average, a level now seen in 32 states," GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said in a statement Monday.
Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have spooked traders in the oil markets, sending prices slightly higher this week as the U.S. approved the use of long-range missiles against Russian targets. A benchmark for U.S. oil costs, West Texas Crude oil was trading above $70 this weekend for the first time in several weeks. Oil is the costliest input in gasoline and has the largest impact on prices at the pump.
