Fastest-growing jobs in STEM

These days, many job seekers face uncertain prospects. Unemployment has crept upward throughout 2025 to hit 4.3% in August, the highest rates seen since October 2021. Layoffs have also increased—in the first 10 months of 2025, companies laid off nearly 1.1 million workers, a 65% increase from the same time period in 2024, according to Challenger, Grey & Christmas.

Though these developments will likely alarm anyone looking for a new job, workers in STEM are particularly affected due to corporate investments in AI and automation. The same Challenger, Grey & Christmas report found that companies are now shedding redundancies within their workforce, with technology job cuts up 17% between 2024 and 2025. Recent college graduates with tech degrees are also struggling, as computer science and computer engineering grads face unemployment rates higher than the national average, per data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

With that said, the STEM field still has plenty of job opportunities compared to other industries. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that growth in STEM occupations will outpace non-STEM job growth by more than five percentage points through 2034, creating 870,000 new jobs in STEM fields.

Additionally, careers in STEM continue to pay well above non-STEM jobs. In 2024, workers in STEM roles earned median wages of $103,580, over twice that of non-STEM workers. This earning power extends well into the future, too. A 2025 Georgetown University study found that regardless of their career stage, individuals with a STEM degree earned higher median wages than all other career fields.

Still, even within STEM fields, some jobs will grow faster than others. To that end, Stacker ranked the top 50 fastest-growing jobs in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), using 2024 data from the BLS Employment Projections. Occupations are ranked by percentage change in jobs between 2024 and 2034.
