Part of the joy of subscribing to a streaming service is discovering great new shows courtesy of the platform.
Case in point: The new Max miniseries "The Sympathizer," which is currently trending on the streamer. The dark comedy is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen's Pulitzer Prize-winning debut novel of the same name, which came out in 2015. The story centers on the Captain (played by Hoa Xuande), a police captain in Saigon, Vietnam who moves to a South Vietnamese refugee community in the United States and secretly reports back to the Viet Cong. The show's ensemble cast also features Sandra Oh, Toan Lea, and an unrecognizable Robert Downey Jr. Since its premiere on April 14, "The Sympathizer"—which has new episodes premiering every Sunday—has been winning over audiences and critics alike.
Elsewhere, the Max reality travel show "Conan O'Brien Must Go" is also making waves. In the four-episode series, which premiered on April 18, the eponymous former late-night talk show host travels around the world to see fans who he previously met virtually through his podcast. Over the course of the series, which was released all at once, O'Brien visits subjects in Bergen, Norway; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Bangkok, Thailand, and multiple cities in Ireland.
