College isn't for everyone, and as student loan debt is close to $1.86 trillion as of the second quarter of 2026, more people are questioning whether or not to pursue higher education. In an NBC News poll released in October 2025, only 33% of Americans stated that they believe college is worth the cost, compared to 49% who said the same less than 10 years earlier in 2017. The naysayers, meanwhile, may be on to something. According to an April 2026 report from College Board, college degrees generally pay off, but average salaries can vary widely based on the type of degree obtained. For example, performing arts graduates earn just $44,000 annually on average compared to the more than $80,000 earned by graduates in mechanical engineering and computer science.
Of course, people who don't graduate from college can still make a good living. A little over half of workers nationwide don't have a college degree, and there are many high-paying jobs for them to choose from. An August 2025 report from LendingTree found that at least 40% of Americans who don't have a bachelor's degree earn a six-figure salary in 20 different occupations, from sales engineers to aircraft pilots.
To explore other high-earning, nondegree careers, Stacker used the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics data, as of 2021, to find the 50 highest-paying jobs out of nearly 500 that don't require a college degree. Jobs are ranked by annual wages; those without annual wages available were not considered. Other experience and training requirements, as well as employment levels and projections, were also included in the analysis but don't affect the rankings.
College enrollment has dropped off in recent years after a historic high, partially thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are among those who aren't sure if college is the best fit for you, whether due to the cost or other factors, you can rest easy knowing there are plenty of career paths available.
Whether you want a technical and mechanical career in repairs or to supervise a retail shop, there are many options for noncollege graduates. Just keep in mind that some careers listed here require other forms of education or licensure, including specialized training programs or apprenticeships.
