Driver's education is a high school rite of passage for many people, but given the number of pedestrian deaths caused by automobiles each year it may be time for some drivers to go back to school. About 15% of all U.S. motor vehicle deaths are pedestrian deaths, and 1.85 pedestrians out of every 100,000 die in motor vehicle accidents.
Stacker crunched the numbers to bring you the rankings of the most dangerous states for pedestrians. The rankings include all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and are based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) and the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) special report on pedestrian safety.
The states are ranked from most to fewest pedestrian deaths per 100,000 people, with the percentage of pedestrian deaths used to break any ties. Keep your eyes open for moving objects the next time you're behind the wheel—and remember to look both ways before you cross the street.
