1.5 million Americans filed for unemployment

An additional 1.5 million Americans filed for unemployment last week, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to more than 44 million.

COVID-19 deaths surpass 500,000 globally

In a grim milestone over the weekend, COVID-19 deaths exceeded 500,000 globally, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. The United States accounts for nearly a quarter of the global death count.

New COVID-19 cases in the US surpass 40,000 in one day

More than 44,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the U.S. on Friday and again on Saturday, setting two single-day records. By June 28, the number of new infections in the U.S. were twice those documented two weeks prior.

Two states report a decline in COVID-19 cases

Last week, Connecticut and Rhode Island were the only two states in the U.S. to report a decline in COVID-19 cases week-over-week. All other states saw record surges or steady rates of infection.

First remote deep sea exploration completed

Scientists at the Schmidt Ocean Institute in California completed the first remote exploration of the little-known depths of the Coral Sea, just beyond Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Through the use of autonomous aquatic robots, the expedition uncovered new forms of life and detailed mapping of the Coral Sea that was largely unexplored.
