Every state's worst COVID-19 week so far

  • Every state's worst COVID-19 week so far

Out of about 11.6 million COVID-19 cases in the U.S., more than 1 million have been reported in the past week, according to the COVID Tracking Project.

Unlike previous waves of America’s COVID-19 outbreak, this current surge is not confined to a single region of the country: every state is seeing rising cases and filling hospitals. COVID Exit Strategy, a public health resource that ranks states based on their progress towards containing the coronavirus, has categorized 47 out of 50 states as having “uncontrolled spread” as of Nov. 20. Of the three remaining states, Maine and Vermont are categorized as “trending poorly” while Hawaii is categorized as “caution warranted.”

To provide a more specific picture of how this outbreak compares to COVID-19 in the spring and summer, Stacker used case and mortality numbers from the COVID Tracking Project to determine each state’s worst COVID-19 week since the pandemic began. The COVID Tracking Project, a volunteer effort housed at The Atlantic, compiles and standardizes data from state public health agencies. This story includes the week with the most new COVID-19 cases and the week with the most new deaths for every state and Washington D.C., as of Nov. 19, along with recent and cumulative COVID-19 figures. COVID-19 figures have been population-adjusted with data from the U.S. Census (American Community Survey 2018 5-year estimates).

For 37 out of 50 states and D.C., the week ending Nov. 19 has seen the most reported COVID-19 cases. The hardest-hit states include North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Minnesota, all of which saw more than 120 new cases per 100,000 residents in the past week.

It is important to note that, although testing is much more available in the fall than it was when COVID-19 first hit the U.S. in spring 2020, the current case surge is not simply the result of a rise in tests. The COVID Tracking Project’s data demonstrate that tests across the U.S. rose 10% from the week of Nov. 11 to the week of Nov. 18, while cases rose 26%. Hospitalizations also rose sharply: over 80,000 Americans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, more than ever before over the course of the pandemic.
