Classic Halloween costumes from 1865 to today

For the second year in a row, Halloween spending is expected to reach record numbers. According to the National Retail Federation's Halloween Spending Survey, 2023 spending will hit $12.2 billion, exceeding the record set in 2022 of $10.6 billion. The greatest increase in spending? Costumes.

For kids in 2023, some of the popular costumes are superheroes (Spiderman in particular), Mario, and Wednesday Addams, while among adults, characters like Barbie and Batman are at the top of the list. Of course, some of the costumes are indicative of the biggest pop culture hits of the year, like Netflix's "Wednesday" TV series,  the smash-hit "Super Mario Bros. Movie," and Greta Gerwig's massively successful "Barbie" movie. But others—like witches, vampires, and zombies—are classics that date back decades.

To celebrate the tradition of dressing up for Halloween, Stacker scoured the archives to find 50 photos of Halloween costumes from 1865 to today. The usual suspects pop up throughout the centuries—cats, witches, ghosts, and ghouls—but timely references also make an appearance, from Darth Vader to Ronald Reagan.
